Metroview includes a commute filter that lets you view activity with a utilitarian purpose. On Strava, commutes are defined as non-recreational trips, which can include travel to work, school, errands, or other everyday destinations. Strava members can mark their activities as commutes in the core Strava app or web page as one of many activity tag options.
To help identify commute trips more broadly, we reviewed commute activities in the Strava dataset to understand their common characteristics. Those characteristics are applied across the full dataset to identify additional activities that also align with non-recreational travel patterns. This allows Metroview to display a more complete picture of commute-related activity without relying only on user-tagged commutes. Commute identification applies to both cycling and pedestrian activity in Metroview.
The commute filter can be used alongside other filters in Metroview, including mode, date range, time of day, and day of week. Commute totals also appear as a field in the Edge Counts export for partners who want to work with commute activity outside Metroview.
Commute activities contribute to the carbon savings metric on the Metroview dashboard. You can learn more about that metric here: Estimated Carbon Saved.
