*Counter data in Metroview helps create a more complete picture of active transportation and prepares for the upcoming Total Trip Estimates feature. This article covers how to add and manage observation data. For an overview of the project, see Introduction to Counter Stations and Observation Data in Metroview . To learn how to enable and manage counter stations, see Counter Stations - Add and Manage in Metroview*
Once you’ve created a counter station, you can enter, review, and manage the observation data associated with that station.
Adding Observation Data to a Counter Station
To add new observation data to an existing counter station, click Add Observation Data from the counter station’s detail panel.
Granularity: The time unit of your observation (15 minutes, hour, day, month, or year). This defines how the count data is grouped.
Start Time (required): The date and time when the count period began (mm/dd/yyyy, hh:mm). Times must be entered in 15-minute increments (:00, :15, :30, :45).
End Time (required): The date and time when the count period ended (mm/dd/yyyy, hh:mm). Times must be entered in 15-minute increments (:00, :15, :30, :45).
Total Count (required): The total number of bicycles or pedestrians recorded during the period
Notes: Any additional context or explanation for this observation
Click Save or Save and Add Another when finished. Saved observations will appear under the Observation Data header for that counter station. From here you can:
Edit Observation: Open and update a saved record
Delete Observation: Remove a record permanently if it was entered incorrectly
Reviewing and Validating Data
Accurate observation data is essential for reliable analysis. Before saving or when reviewing existing records, check for accuracy in dates, times, and counts. Look for anomalies such as unusually high or low values that might indicate a typo or malfunction. Cross-check with your original field logs or automated reports when available.
Common mistakes to avoid:
Adding extra zeros (e.g., “10,000” instead of “1,000”)
Entering start and end times in the wrong order
Forgetting to update the date when reusing a previous entry
Editing Existing Data
If you or someone else in your Metroview organization created the counter location, you can edit its details or update observation data. Click the counter station icon on the map, open the observation, and select Edit Observation or Edit Counter Station. Save changes when finished.
If you notice incorrect information in a counter station or observation added by another organization, you will not be able to edit it. Please contact us through the Help Center's message tools or email support@stravametro.zendesk.com for assistance.

Data format errors: Enter dates in mm/dd/yyyy and times in 24 hour time format
Missing required fields: Fields marked with an asterisk (*) must be filled in before saving
Location mismatches: If a station is not aligned with the correct edge, adjust the plane of crossing when creating or editing
Permission issues: You cannot edit data from counter stations created by other organizations
Best Practices for Data Input
Enter data regularly to keep Metroview current
Maintain consistency with station names, IDs, and notes across your organization
Review before saving to catch mistakes early
